Stone Test

Absorption Test

The Repellency Test

  • Using a simple process of applying water to different surfaces we can learn how each surface absorbs liquids.
  • Apply the water
  • Wait 15 minutes
  • See and evaluate the results
  • Remember most stone problems are related to moisture, such as: Rust, mold, algae, efflorescence, discoloring, spawling, freeze thaw, erosion, etc.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Stone Care Products

Frequently Asked Questions for Stone Care Products (FAQ’s)

Q. *What are stone sealers?

Ans) Stone sealers are chemicals used for the treating the stone’s surface to protect it from getting stains on it and thus prevent it from becoming shabby/ugly or simply stained.

Q. *What are the types of stone sealers?

Ans) Stone sealers are of two types – Topical or Film forming stone sealers and Impregnating or subsurface or absorbing or non-film forming stone sealers.

Q. *What is the difference in the above types?

Ans) Topical sealers do not maintain a natural look of the stone and the life is short. They make the stone un-breathable and this can lead to cracking or chipping of stones. Impregnating sealers are latest technology and penetrate into the surface and provide repellency to the stone’s surface. These are more safer and longer lasting and true stone protecting polymers.

Q. *Which one is better Solvent based sealers or Water based?

Ans) Solvent and water is only a carrier medium. It is the active polymer in the sealer which will bond with the stone and offer protection. There are 2 types of polymers in Impregnating Sealers – Silicon and Fluorine. Silicon polymer offers protection only to water based stains while Fluoro-polymer offers protection to water as well as oil based stains.

Q. *Stones manufacturers already do an epoxy coating, why do I need another treatment?

Ans) Epoxy & Polyester coatings are largely done to fill the cracks, chipped out stone, pin holes etc.. and come out during the usage of the stone. It has nothing to do with protection. A sealer will basically protect the stone and also the epoxy filled in the cracks.

Q. *I want a glossy finish to my stone, which sealer should I use?

Ans) To get a glossy finish one will need to use gloss enhancing products such as polishes and waxes. There is no product in this world which will give gloss and provide stain protection too. Hence, sealer will protect and gloss powders/polishes will enhance the gloss. Thus, two products for two effects.

Q. *How long my gloss and sealer will last?

Ans) Gloss and sealer’s life both depends on the traffic on the stone. However, gloss being on the surface will wear out almost 10 times faster than the sealer. Hence gloss enhancement might be needed every 3 months, but sealer treatment might be needed only after 2 to 10 years as it is penetrating into the surface.

Q. *What type of Cleaners can I use for regular maintenance?

Ans) Plain water is recommended to clean after sealer treatment. One can use a neutral pH cleaner periodically. Avoid using acidic or alkaline based cleaners, as this will destroy the sealer polymer and the stone’s surface over a period of time.

Q. *Can I use sealer on surfaces other than stone?

Ans) Sealers can be used on any porous surface, but sampling needs to be done to ascertain the performance of the same.

Q. *What is the difference between a Sealer and a Sealant?

Ans) Sealers are impregnating and give repellency. Sealants are basically modified polymers used in expansion joints to absorb any shocks and vibrations. Sealants are applied with a gun and are solid in nature while sealers are applied with a paint brush and are liquid in nature.
